Smoking jackets emerged around 1850, a style of decorative outwear gentlemen donned to protect their evening clothes from tobacco smoke. Though only worn for a short time, they were unusually luxurious, made from velvet, cashmere, or brocade and ornamented with frogging or decorative braid.
This felted smoking jacket features tonal roping trim around the shawl collar and cuffs. It closes with handmade frog closures.
