Nike SB explore the authentic flavours of Thai cuisine with their latest Dunk, hitting the spot with a refreshingly light “Som Tum” Dunk Low Pro, a green papaya salad-inspired recipe. Tied into Thailand’s New Year celebration, Songkran, the tribute begins with a woven upper mirroring the traditional bamboo kratip baskets used to store and serve rice, with earthy green underlays bringing shredded papaya flavours. A pop of colour cuts through the details and accents to reflect the balance of spicy, tangy, and fresh flavours, whilst keeping skating performance at the heart of the dish.
The Swoosh wraps the upper with complimentary suede Parachute Beige, allowing other areas of the dish to pop: an ornate chrome tab, styled like traditional Thai tableware, sits on the heel, adorned with a Thai translation of ‘NIKE’ and tasteful stitching. The earthy woven upper is spiked with a hit of orange spice through the laces and tongue tag branding, as well as stitching through the midsole, symbolising the bird's eye chillis which famously bring the heat to the Som Tum.
The flavours of Thailand don’t stop there, with little hidden ingredients bringing the Dunk together. The back of the right tongue displays a Som Tum salad, whilst the left, a bowl of sticky rice. The insoles feature Nike SB’s take on the branding typical of jasmine rice bags, as well as matching illustrated lotus flowers on the Zoom Air Heel insert.
Underfoot, it’s prepared for skating, with all the ingredients you would expect from a shoe in the SB Dunk lineup, including a padded low-cut collar for comfort and cushioned PU foam insole with Nike Zoom Air Heel insert. The rubber outsole matches the colour palette of the upper, with the Dunk's classic tread present for grip and durability. The final detail rounding out the balanced flavour profile of the Som Tum Dunk is the central green insert dissecting the outsole, representing the green papaya of the legendary dish.
