Guide

Full breakdown

The Nike Air Footscape was designed by Tinker Hatfield and released in 1996, featuring a revolutionary asymmetric lacing system that moved the laces to the outer edge of the foot rather than across the top. This freed the metatarsals from pressure and created a more natural foot shape. The midsole uses Air cushioning and the upper combines woven mesh with leather overlays. Various iterations including the Woven and Magista versions have kept the concept alive. It remains one of Nike's most genuinely innovative designs.

Questions answered

FAQ

Why does the Air Footscape have asymmetric lacing?

Tinker Hatfield moved the laces to the outside of the foot to eliminate pressure across the metatarsal area on top of the foot. This allows the toes and forefoot to spread naturally without restriction. The design was biomechanically motivated and predated the barefoot running movement by over a decade.

Is the Air Footscape comfortable?

For many wearers, the asymmetric lacing makes it one of the most comfortable Nike shoes ever. The wider toe box and freedom from top-of-foot pressure create a relaxed, natural feel. People with wide feet or bunions often find it more comfortable than standard Nike fits.

Is the Footscape still in production?

Nike retros it periodically but doesn't keep it in continuous production. Various versions (Woven, Magista, NM) have appeared over the years. The original Footscape and Woven version are the most sought-after. Availability is inconsistent.

Who wears the Air Footscape?

Design enthusiasts, Japanese fashion followers, and people who appreciate experimental footwear. It's never been a mass-market shoe — its appeal is rooted in its innovative construction rather than cultural moments or celebrity endorsement. Shoe designers and architects often cite it as a favorite.
