Versace was founded in Milan in 1978 by Gianni Versace, who turned Italian luxury fashion loud, sexual, and unapologetically glamorous at a time when the establishment favored restraint. The Medusa head, the gold baroque prints, the supermodel-era runway spectacles — Gianni made fashion a cultural event. After his murder in 1997, his sister Donatella took over as creative director and has led the house ever since, including through its 2018 acquisition by Capri Holdings.
