Kangol was founded in 1938 in Cumbria, England, by Polish emigre Jacques Spreiregen, whose factory supplied berets to British armed forces throughout World War II and to the 1948 Olympic team. The brand became a hip-hop icon in the 1980s through LL Cool J and Grandmaster Flash, and its name derives from the materials silk (K), angora (ANG), and wool (OL).
